Franciscan Home Care was founded in 1974 by Sister Marcia Ternes, F.S.E., as requests for personal care in the home came from elderly. On July 11, 1985, Franciscan Home Care was licensed by the State Department of Public Health to provide homemaker-home health aide services. As clients needed more services, the agency was impelled to expand its service areas.

On April 29, 1987, Franciscan Home Care was licensed by the State Department of Public Health as a home health care agency to serve in five towns-Meriden, Wallingford, Cheshire, Southington, and Waterbury-and in the following service areas:

Nursing
Medical social work
Home health aide services
Physical therapy
Speech therapy
Occupational therapy

In 1998, the agency was licensed to provide hospice care and then changed its name to Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care.
